Dimanche, oil on canvas / 100 x 80 cm – 39.3 x 31.4 in / 2004 – Sold

Caribbean population on their way to their place of worship.

This painting illustrates the faith of the West Indians, who give thanks to heaven, even in the most humble of chapels.

This Sunday of 1920 like every Sunday in Martinique, the inhabitants go to the church of their municipality or their village. Along the way, gather together, men, women, young, old, rich and poor, all are there.

Sunday ! Day of prayer and day of celebration, in each household, everything is already ready so that, upon their return, the families can continue the celebration in a good mood around a good meal.

For the occasion, the best dishes are prepared : fish or pigs accompanied by rice, red beans or local vegetables such as yam.

While some inhabitants dressed luxuriously, even the most modest of farmers wore their Sunday dress to praise the Lord.
